Shay’s journey began in pharmaceutical science during her master’s degree, where she worked on a research project focused on developing a new generation of antibiotics through genetic manipulation of human antibacterial peptides. While working in this field, she became deeply interested in establishing an efficient method to produce and purify recombinant human Hepcidin 25 using genetic engineering technologies, leading to a publication in  “Gene” journal. Following this, Shay led a project where she developed a platform for the production of functional recombinant antibacterial peptides.

Motivated by her growing interest in applied research, Shay transitioned into animal nutrition, where she now explores the critical role of diet in optimizing gut health. Her PhD project, titled “Interactions Between Dietary Composition, Nutrient Uptake, Gut Health, and Growth Performance in Poultry”, focuses on understanding how dietary components, and alternative feed ingredients influence gut health. Utilizing advanced molecular techniques like host gene expression and transcriptomics analysis, she examines biomarkers associated with gut integrity, nutrient transporters, and immune responses, linking these to growth performance and feed efficiency. Shay’s interdisciplinary background uniquely positions her to address challenges in poultry nutrition through a molecular lens. Her long-term goal is to develop innovative nutritional strategies that enhance gut health and improve the productivity and sustainability of the poultry industry. After completing her PhD, Shay plans to pursue a career in academic or industrial research and development, focusing on driving innovations that promote sustainable poultry production.
