PRF’s Symbol of Dedication and Longstanding Service Hangs Up her Boots

by Jo-Ann Geist

Mrs Joy Gill, Senior Technical Officer, retired on 29 May 2026 after an extraordinary 52 years of dedicated service to poultry research and teaching at the Poultry Research Foundation (PRF), University of Sydney.

To mark this remarkable milestone, the PRF team gathered to celebrate Joy’s outstanding contribution and reflect on the lasting impact she has had on generations of staff, students, and industry partners. Back in 2023, Poultry@Sydney featured an article highlighting Joy’s dedication, professionalism, and passion for poultry research. The article serves as a fitting tribute to her pivotal role in the success of PRF’s research programs and the countless individuals whose careers she has influenced over more than five decades.

Mrs. Joy Gill celebrating at her farewell.

Throughout her career, Joy has been much more than a technical officer. She has been a mentor, problem-solver, organiser, and trusted colleague. Many students have completed their degrees, researchers have advanced their careers, and staff members have navigated the challenges of research and teaching with Joy’s guidance, support, and remarkable ability to make even the most complex tasks seem effortless.

At her farewell celebration, PRF Director A/Prof Reza Barekatain thanked Joy on behalf of the entire PRF team and the University of Sydney:

“Thank you sincerely for your exemplary service, unwavering dedication, and passion over these extraordinary 52 years. Your contribution to this place is immeasurable, and your legacy will remain long after your ‘retirement’ and I use that term loosely….”

The breadth of Joy’s impact was reflected in the many heartfelt messages shared by colleagues. Their words highlighted not only her exceptional technical expertise but also her generosity, enthusiasm, humour, and commitment to helping others succeed.

As A/Prof Wendy Muir remarked; “You are always right in the middle, orchestrating anything that has happened at the Poultry Research Unit for the last 50-plus years. We will miss your organisation, enthusiasm, clear-cut answers and humour, that’s for sure.”

Dr. Emma Bradbury, an alumnus of the PRF said “Thank you for all the help and support that you provided over the years of my PhD! Every trial was made more enjoyable getting to work with you. I have so many fond memories from sample days and all of us being crowded in the tearoom but still being able to have a laugh”.

Current Dammy Kareem PhD student also noted “Your energy and enthusiasm never cease to amaze me! Thank you for being a very strong pillar of PRF for so long”.

These comments represent only a small fraction of the appreciation felt by those who have had the privilege of working alongside Joy. Her dedication, professionalism, and unwavering support have helped shape the PRF community and contributed significantly to its success over many decades.

While Joy’s daily presence at PRF will be greatly missed, her influence will continue through the research she supported, the people she mentored, and the culture of excellence and collegiality she helped foster. On behalf of everyone at PRF and the University of Sydney, we thank Joy for her remarkable service and wish her a long, healthy, and fulfilling retirement.
