PRF Putting on a Show
By Jo-Ann Geist
The Poultry Research Foundation – Level 2 Centre, in conjunction with The University of Sydney, Faculty of Science, Partner Engagement and Outreach team participated in two outreach events in April 2025. These events provided valuable opportunities to engage with the broader community and promote greater awareness of poultry science and the wider agricultural sector.
First up, on the 4th-5th April, was the 139th Annual Camden Agricultural Show which showcases agriculture and associated industries to the wider community. The overall University of Sydney display was outstanding, covering all aspects of species, whether animal or grain, alongside the advanced technologies used at the Camden and Cobbitty campuses. Our poultry display drew a lot of attention from all the local schools, pre-schools, community groups and general public. We featured several interactive elements, including teaching models with a “Guess My Weight” and “What Type of Chicken Am I” activity. Visitors could also explore samples of ingredients used in poultry diets, the “Life Cycle of a Chick” interactive display and a quiz for everyone to engage in to learn more about where our food sources come from and the chicken meat and egg industry in Australia. It was a successful weekend with plenty of engagement, and we sincerely thank the staff and students who helped bring this show to life.

The following week, from the 11th-13th April, the Poultry Research Foundation staff and students participated in another outreach event at the Sydney Royal Easter Show held at Sydney Olympic Park. The University of Sydney partnered with The Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) to offer opportunities for involvement throughout the two-week programme. This allowed various University departments to showcase their work. Once again, our stand attracted significant interest and we hope that we have inspired some future students to consider a career in our industry.
The success of these events would not have been possible without the dedication, energy, and professionalism of our staff and students. Your willingness to volunteer your time and share your expertise made a meaningful impact on the community and greatly enhanced the University’s visibility and reputation. On behalf of the PRF and Faculty of Science, we extend our sincere thanks to everyone who participated and helped make these outreach efforts such a success.
